When Alberto Alessi asked Philippe Starck to create a butter dish... Created in 1988, the lemon squeezer made from aluminum casting is one of PhilippeStarck's first projects for Alessi. Sketched on the paper tablecloth of a restaurant during a trip to Italy, Juicy Salif's biomorphism is striking.

"It was a mathematical exercise of reverse topology, turning concave into convex, first for mental workout and game and then for cleaning purposes."

The result is a surprising, poetic and subversive object, which integrates the usual parameters of creation under a new prism. Juicy Salif is both a lemon squeezer and the trigger for many conversations. Immense popular and academic success, it is still one of Alessi's best-selling andpublished creations. A structurally new, visionary and timeless object that has become an icon of contemporary design.

Philippe Starck is a renowned French designer and architect celebrated for his innovative, functional, and often whimsical creations. Starck rose to prominence in the 1980s with interior design projects like the Hôtel Royal Monceau in Paris and the Café Costes. Known for his unconventional approach, he has created iconic pieces such as the Louis Ghost Chair and Juicy Salif citrus squeezer. His designs often merge functionality with a playful twist, demonstrating a deep commitment to creativity and innovation.

Juicy Salif No.3

It is specifically on the creative/imaginary borderline between what is possible and what isn’t that we can place Juicy Salif Study n.3: a fascinating and unpublished research sample of the iconic juicer designed by Philippe Starck, in which the sculpturality of the object completement its function, expressing itself in full.

“Juicy Salif Study n.3” reproduces one of the first prototypes realised on the basis of Philippe Starck’s sketches on a paper tablemat of a pizzeria: these early designs produced during a trip to Italy thus gave life to what is defined as “the most controversial juicer of the 20th century”.

The juicer – the 9th project presented for the Alessi 100 Values Collection – is produced in cast bronze in a numbered edition of 999.
